Growth in care at home organizations often brings a familiar challenge: as census increases, operational complexity increases with it. Without the right systems in place, even the strongest teams can struggle to keep workflows efficient, stay compliant, and keep pace with rising demand. Organizations that scale successfully tend to have one thing in common: they leverage technology strategically to streamline workflows and empower teams at every level.
United Energy Workers (UEW) Healthcare, a multi‑state care at home provider serving former nuclear and uranium energy workers, embodies this approach. As patient volume expanded across 37 offices in 25 states, UEW needed a technology partner that could increase operational visibility, reduce administrative burden, and support a rapidly growing workforce. Their experience offers a clear example of how innovation can unlock both productivity and sustainable growth in care at home.
Streamlining Processes to Boost Productivity
UEW implemented Axxess Home Care in 2024 to simplify workflows and eliminate inefficiencies that slowed productivity. Soon after, the impact was clear.
“Since then, we’ve seen our census grow by about 15%,” UEW President Will Burton said less than a year later. “The Axxess Home Care platform has enabled us to increase our productivity and keep our operations so well-managed that we’re able to expand our reach, meeting the needs of more and more patients and families across the United States.”
One of the most significant improvements came through documentation modernization. Before transitioning to Axxess, more than a third of UEW’s caregivers were still documenting on paper. After implementation, that number dropped dramatically.
“One of our goals when starting with Axxess was to minimize the number of caregivers we had documenting on paper,” Burton explained. “With our previous EMR, more than 37% of our caregivers were still on paper documentation. We now have only 11% of caregivers using paper documentation and are decreasing that number even further by increasing use of the Axxess Home Care mobile application.”
By shifting the large majority of caregivers to digital documentation, UEW reclaimed time, reduced duplication, and strengthened accuracy, all critical factors in scaling effectively.
Improving Visibility and Operational Control
Axxess Home Care gave UEW leadership the clarity needed to support a large, dispersed workforce. Case managers gained new visibility into caregiver activity and documentation, enabling them to address issues quickly and efficiently. This visibility extended beyond documentation into scheduling as well, giving leaders and case managers the tools to ensure visits were planned accurately and in compliance with authorization requirements.
“Communication notes in Axxess Home Care are a huge time-saver, as is the Schedule Center,” Burton said. “Case managers have total oversight of caregivers’ visit notes and can follow up with them conveniently and efficiently using communication notes. The Schedule Center facilitates easy, compliant scheduling, ensuring we adhere to the approved authorization hours when scheduling visits.”
This expanded oversight supported both productivity and compliance. With greater visibility came faster issue resolution, fewer documentation errors, and smoother coordination across office and field teams. For an organization operating in diverse communities nationwide, this visibility was essential to sustained high-quality service.
Driving Growth Through Efficient Billing and Financial Workflows
Operational improvements also translated into significant financial efficiency. UEW saw measurable gains in billing turnaround time and reimbursement accuracy, strengthening the organization’s foundation for long-term growth.
“Our weekly billing of claims has quadrupled with Axxess Home Care and we have a much lower rebill rate, saving us time and effort and ensuring we get full reimbursement,” Burton said.
This increase in throughput, combined with fewer rebills, reflects the compounding effect of clean documentation, real-time oversight, and aligned workflows. These elements collectively support the organization’s ability to scale without adding unnecessary administrative burden.
Simplifying Training and Adoption for a Distributed Workforce
Behind these improvements is an ecosystem that caregivers can actually use. UEW credits Axxess with making adoption straightforward, even for caregivers with limited technical experience.
“We initially were worried that our caregivers would have a slow adoption rate to Axxess Home Care, that a lot of training would have to be deployed because our prior EMR was so different,” Burton said. “However, the forms and GUI [graphical user interface] layout offered by Axxess Home Care enabled most of our caregivers to complete assigned tasks using their intuition about the system – like using any popular social media software.”
This ease of use reduced onboarding time, accelerated adoption, and ensured staff across dozens of locations could quickly document, communicate, and coordinate using a consistent system. As the organization expanded, this intuitive design became essential for maintaining productivity while onboarding new team members at scale.
Building the Foundation for Sustainable Growth
UEW’s journey demonstrates how technology-led innovation can strengthen operations and create the foundation needed for meaningful growth. By streamlining workflows, improving documentation accuracy, increasing billing efficiency, and making training simple, the organization positioned itself for long-term success, and earned recognition through the Growth and Innovation Award at AGILE 2025.
Their experience illustrates something many organizations overlook: scalable growth in care at home isn’t just about adding more patients or expanding into more states. It’s about empowering teams with tools that make their work easier, more accurate, and more connected. When organizations invest in technology that elevates productivity, they create the stability and capacity needed to grow confidently, without compromising the quality of care patients deserve.
