Although it may seem as though our society is navigating in uncharted waters during the COVID-19 crisis there is a great deal of experience on which to draw. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights other past pandemics.

Understanding What to Do It may not seem like it during a pandemic, but the outbreak does eventually end. As these events unfold and our understanding of the specifics of the COVID-19 disease and treatment evolve daily, there are things that we must do for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

  • Be attentive to reputable news sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for accurate and unbiased information
  • Diligently practice social distancing, regardless of your age or your perception of risk
  • Minimize unnecessary time in the public
  • Wash hands and surfaces thoroughly in accordance with CDC recommendations
  • If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, call your primary care provider for further directions. Symptoms include:
    • Fever (>100.4)
    • Dry cough
    • Shortness of breath
    • Body aches
    • Fatigue

Physical and Emotional Wellness These are unique and stressful times, which is why it is very important to make efforts to maintain personal mental and physical wellness.

  • Get regular exercise and sunshine (while maintaining social distancing)
  • Eat well
  • Maintain a regular sleep schedule
  • Call friends and families, particularly those who are elderly or alone. Social distancing does not need to be the same as social isolation
  • Offer to pick up groceries or pharmacy items for those who may be at higher risk

Those providing direct patient care continue patient visits and many have transitioned to working from home. This can create additional challenges and opportunities.

  • Maintain a regular work schedule. Be productive, but also unplug at the end of the day
  • Create a dedicated workspace
  • Stay connected with co-workers. Make calls or video chats to maintain regular interactions
  • Take breaks. Go for walks; spend time with family; get some fresh air and sunshine
  • Call isolated friends
  • Use curbside services and deliveries
  • Support small businesses

We are all in this together. It is normal to have stress and anxiety at times like this. By following the advice of medical experts and government officials, remaining calm, and supporting one another, we will weather this storm as well.
